Free Play in the Tot Room
Free Play in the Tot Room Upper Noe’s schedule will be very similar to winter, with an added class of indoor soccer for 3- to 5-year-olds on Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. “That’s a really popular one,” said Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen. Tots will have a range of options, from music to karate. Tweens will be offered acting, martial arts and tennis classes divided by age. And parents, did you think you were going to slide this spring? Nope—boot camp is being offered again too. Two classes that were introduced in the winter and became big hits will be back: Bow Wow Baking and Food in Jars, the very popular canning class, are both taught by chef John Rutheford. Spring term runs March 17 to June 1. We will list the classes at Upper Noe on our website as soon as they are announced, but to get a flavor of what’s to come, visit our classes page now.
Tennis Lessons at Your School Recreation Coordinator Lou Maunupau, who teaches the tennis classes at Upper Noe, uses a specific curriculum designed for younger children. Its "Quick-Start" equipment can be set up on any blacktop. For more information, contact Maunupau by emailing lou.maunupau@sfgov.org or calling 415-695-5011. Summer camp registration starts March 16, and a schedule of camps will be available starting February 19. Unlike last summer, Upper Noe will have no summer camp, which will mean more hours for tot free play in the auditorium. Facility Coordinator Cheryl Woltjen said the site might be able to offer tennis classes for younger children ages 4 to 6. If you are interested in tot tennis, please let her know by emailing cheryl.woltjen@sfgov.org or calling 415-970-8061. Last year more than 5,000 children attended Recreation and Parks Department summer camps, and this year there will be more than 70 different camps all over the city. Registration will start at 10 a.m. and can be done online (www.sfreconline.org) or at any recreation center for any class in the city. Don't forget: February 8 is the last day to enter the Camp Mather lottery.
San Francisco families with children of all ages are invited to this showcase of summer activities. Exhibitors will have information about camps, classes, sports, teen programs and jobs and more.
Children ages 4 to 6 (by January 1, 2013) will practice Tuesdays 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., and the team for children ages 5 to 7 (by April 30, 2013) will practice immediately after, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Both teams are full and available by waitlist only. The games—all on Saturdays—start March 16. The season runs to the last week in May. Fees are $80 per player, which includes coaching, uniforms, practice and games. The league is hosted in conjunction with the San Francisco Fire Department’s FLAME program, which hosts athletic leagues, a boxing program and sponsors free fishing trips for Bay Area youth. A couple of hours thinning the thicket of ivy and weeding in the fresh air is a great way for students to earn volunteer credit, don’t forget. Lead Ladybug Joan Lionberger was pleased to report a healthy turnout for the January 10 gardening. “We had over ten neighbors and our local merchant from the pet washing shop weeding the dog run and the Ladybug Garden on 30th street,” Lionberger said. “It was nice getting out of the house – the air was so clean.” Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and water, plus what they can of the following tools: small shovels, clippers and brooms. The center grounds would also be greatly helped by a donation of spring bulbs and bird seed, she said.

Canine Corner How does Joby’s Run dog play area stay so nice? Well, it’s not magic and it’s not Rec & Park. Users grab a broom or a rake now and then and pitch in to do the daily maintenance necessary to keep the place an attractive location for neighbors to spend some time. Every once in a while the dog owner group (FUNDOG) calls for a clean up day to tackle problems and to give the whole place a good scrubbing. Recently, a dedicated group of volunteers spent Saturday morning grading gravel, hacking back ivy and weeds, trimming bushes and trees, and addressing hazards. Whew! The dogs pitched in where they could.
Grant Denied Department staff received 25 applications totaling $3.6 million in requests for this $1.25 million round, said Jake Gilchrist, a project manager with the department. “Across the board, the applications were quite good,” he said. One factor considered was the state of the park—dilapidated, for example—and how much the proposed project would increase the use of the space. Upper Noe Recreation Center just finished a two-year $11.6 million renovation, which may have made our application less competitive. • Help advise the city on what classes should be offered at the Upper Noe Rec Center. Serve a term on the Upper Noe Recreation Center’s Community Recreation Council and help shape programming at the Center. A teen member is still needed! Please contact Cheryl Woltjen at 970-8061. This newsletter is distributed to nearly 1,000 “friends.” Make sure interested neighbors know about our group by helping distribute our informational postcard around the neighborhood. Please email molly (at) noevalleyreccenter.com if you know of a good shop or cafe to distribute the postcards. Or you could help put them somewhere frequented by park users. • Lead a new event. Help keep the park beautiful by volunteering with the Ladybug Gardeners on the second Saturday of every month. All ages welcome, no experience necessary. Even an hour would be a big help!
